Why the world needs to worry about China’s environmental standards
It's not just its carbon emissions that are a global challenge
Hello and welcome to What China Wants.
As COP26 starts in earnest, it seems a good time to write about the environmental challenges that China faces. And what challenges they are.
China has some of the worst air, soil, and water pollution in the world. This matters to the Chinese people of course, who often live in grossly polluted cities, eating produce that has been grown in contaminated soil, reliant on a dwindling source of water.
But it also concerns the rest of the world. Not only is China accused of exporting its pollution, but the remedies it is taking to become a leader in green technologies look set to contort global markets to its own advantage.
Today’s newsletter is slightly different because my article has first been published in the UK magazine CapX, and so I’m going to direct you there for your daily read.

Here are the headlines:
With polluted air, water and soil, conditions in China are 'grim', according to official sources.
Worries about food shortages have led Beijing to buy up farmland across the world.
As China invests in green tech, its sheer weight will skew markets in its favour.

Many thanks for reading, and I’ll be back next week.
